Return Of The Vikings, Antrim
The Vikings must really like Antrim, because they just keep coming back for more! Don't worry, nothing was burnt (except the odd burger) or pillaged - this was the third annual Return Of The Vikings.
As usual, the event was held at Loughshore Park in Antrim, a nice little spot on the eastern shore of Lough Neagh. I'll give you a bit more detail about Loughshore Park in a future post.
The focal point of the Return Of The Vikings is a longboat race down the Sixmilewater River, featuring two teams of 10 rowers, each headed by a Viking. Although I missed most of the racing, I believe there were teams from Mivan and SAM Mouldings, both local companies. The boats looked great, even if the 'Lough Neagh Monster' was a bit questionable!
Up on the grass, there was a Viking encampment, with displays of weapons and other produce. Part of the aim of the day is to challenge the stereotype of Vikings as purely war-like - they were also 'farmers, traders and settlers'. I chatted briefly with one of the Vikings (a group from Downpatrick) and was given a tour of the tent.
I was given some chainmail to feel how heavy it was, and given the heat of the day I didn't fancy marching for miles and then fighting in that! Must be an acquired taste....
The Non-Viking Bits
Aside from the Vikings, there were plenty of other attractions today: trampolines and fairground rides for the children, a craft tent featuring displays by local traders. World Of Owls from Randalstown were there too (they're doing a lot of summer events this year). There was also face painting and free (temporary) tattoos for the children.
Having said that, the weather today was stunning and perhaps the best bit was lolling on the grass with an ice-cream while two Vikings battled it out nearby! This year's event was in support of Action MS.
